Small Business Accounting

I recently came across a requirement to start to track my inventory and bookkeeping needs a little more advanced than a basic spreadsheet and Quicken. As such, I started the arduous task of looking into accounting applications that could fit the bill. First and foremost, I laid out my requirements as follows:

Online Reconciliation W/ My Existing Bank Account
Flexibility Within the Chart of Accounts Feature
Support of Both Cash/Accrual Methodologies for Accounting (I Use a Cash Basis for Priority Supplements)
Employee Tracking W/ Integrated Payroll
Detailed Inventory Management
Account/Contact Mgmt. (Basic)
Integration to 3rd Party Add Ons Such As CRM, E-Commerce, Payment Processing (Visa, MC, AMEX, Discover).

With these requirements laid out I began a comparison of all the features within the marketplace. A natural first selection to review were QuickBooks and PeachTree. These applications lend nicely to a small business budget while offering a strong set of features. Sage’s PeachTree offers a more robust feature set with their Quantum Edition and QuickBooks does the same with their Enterprise Solutions. Both products work well within in a standard PC, peer to peer and Windows server network. The difference that I noticed in the applications were small but somewhat noticeable. I found QuickBooks to be far more discoverable than PeachTree. I also found the third party add-ons to be phenomenal (http://marketplace.intuit.com).

In doing some further research I also found web based applications that do a great job in fitting the bill. For example, there is a product called Less Accounting that offers a phenomenal feature set for a modest monthly fee. There is no physical installation of software on my Mac or PC. I looked at the QuickBooks Online Edition as well which left me wanting. Without some of the required inventory/payroll features that I require, I simple couldn’t use it. Another crucial instrument for me was to have an interface available via my IPhone. As I am consistently away from the office, I need to have real-time access to critical expense/revenue information to make concise business decision. As such, I am currently using the Less Accounting IPhone interface and have been pleased. It does lack some required features such as contact/customer information availability but it is overall a nice feature set to enter expenses in quickly and see real-time balance info.

With the above review being finalized, I have decided to go with Less Accounting for the time being. This product offers the features I require at a cost savings premium ($24 per month for their premium service). I will offer a follow up review in thirty days which will provide a more thorough update. Let me know your thoughts.

Protein

With today’s availability of protein supplements, it becomes confusing as to which options are best suited for your goals. Even in local grocery stores you can find readily available RTD (ready to drink) options link ISS’s “Oh Yeah” or CytoSport’s Muscle Milk.

One of the obvious questions is what supplements work best based on what you are trying to accomplish. With that being stated, I feel that the following is important to note. Digestion periods of proteins traditionally go overlooked. For example, a whey product will usually have a faster digestion period than say an egg protein. Additionally, milk based proteins such as Casein have even a longer protein sustenance period. My experience has been to have a sample of all three products available. For example, Egg proteins tend to be an ideal option for sustained protein delivery during the day. A shake in the morning and afternoon will cover you for six total hours of protein delivery. Whey is obviously ideal immediately following your workout. As a side note, I have experienced the greatest gains with taking an RTD protein shake to the gym and drinking it during my last two sets (obviously take note of your gyms policy of food/drink in the weight room). Casein, without exception, offers the best delivery for protein during sleep. For novices, this is commonly overlooked. With growth hormone at its’ highest and your body under repair during sleep, having a clean protein like casein available insures you are maximizing your results.

In summary, I would recommend that anyone focus on the product lines that work best for them with the above categories being noted. Within the context of this posting I will include a poll to see which product lines the audience enjoys most. Updating Technology

In recent days we have overhauled our infrastructure to meet a better economy of scale. One of the largest decisions for any small business is to find an affordable phone system that will not only give the benefits of much larger systems such as Avaya, Cisco, etc. but also give you less administration and overall cost. In researching all of our options, we decided to use a Hosted PBX option through Toktumi, Inc. (a California based company).

The product is simple to setup, very reliable thus far and offers all the phenomenal features that one would enjoy with a much larger system (such as call routing, softphone technology, voicemail, customized greetings, etc.). The best part of the offering is their proof of concept option which will let try the product out for 30 days at no cost. If others have tried this out, please let me know what your experience has been.

President’s Perspective

This is the first of many posts that will come from this site. The goal of this blog to offer a detailed perspective into two arenas:

1. Successful trends in starting a new small business.

2. A detailed bodybuilding log that will share my insights into successful products, diets, workouts, etc.

As the owner and active CEO of Priority Supplements, Inc. (a company solely focused on promoting and selling quality nutritional supplements). This is the second company that I have an ownership stake in and the second small business I have personally brought to market in the past 8 years. Challenges ranging from trending our success in a recessive economy to the partnership we have formed will be shared within this blog.

As a striving amateur all natural bodybuilder, I also strive for perfection within the growth and maintenance of my own body. This aspect of the blog will be solely focused on nutritional supplementation, diet (both growth and cutting phases) and detailed workout regimens (such as traditional weight lifting as well as new trends such as Crossfit).
